Large luggage to require reservations on Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen trains

Sep 4, 2019

Commencing in May 2020, in the lead up to the Tokyo Summer Olympics, passengers will be required to make a reservation for any “extra-large” luggage brought aboard Shinkansen trains on the JR Tokaido, Kyushu, and Sanyo lines – including all Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka (Hakata), Kumamoto and Kagoshima.

A piece of luggage will be deemed to be “extra-large” when its length, width, and height total 160-250 cm or more. However, there is no weight limit.

Reservations for large luggage will be free, but failing to book in advance will attract a 1,000 yen fee (which must be paid in cash when boarding the train). Bookings can be made at the same time and in the same manner as seat reservations – including online, through ticket machines at local train stations or at ticket counters.  Initially, extra-large luggage will be stored behind the last row of seats in each carriage and eventually (from 2023) lockers will be built onboard to store the extra luggage.

The changes are designed to help prevent over-crowding of carriage and ensure the safety of passengers.
